This post rounds up some of the ideas I’ll be sharing in the opening keynote at the Virginia School Counselors Association (VSCA) conference on October 15. I’m super excited to speak at this conference! As always, feel free to reach out with questions. And if you’re attending VSCA and I forget to link something mentioned in my session, please let me know!
Ideas covered in Opening Session: “Staying Relevant While Remaining Resilient”
Growth Mindset: Carol Dweck’s TED Talk
I was on a Delta flight in 2015 when I watched this TED Talk by Carol Dweck, and it truly changed the trajectory of my life. It’s influenced my career (and inspired me to write Mindset Matters), the way I teach (always looking for ways to weave in a growth mindset), and even how I parent. It’s worth your 10 minutes!
The Learning Space
Dr. Becky has a great way of explaining that they place we we all get in, when we aren’t there YET is called the Learning Space. I’ve noticed that some kids and adults lack the tolerance of staying in this compfortable zone for very long.
Staying Current on Slang with Mr. Lindsay
Mr. Lindsay is a middle school special education teacher who is on all the socials teaching us about middle school slang that he hears each day. He’s pretty funny and very informative!
Make Sure Students Know How To See School Counselor
Also, the other session I’ll be doing at VSCA is Understanding Why Kids Behave the Way they D0. Check out some ideas on that session here.
Let me know any questions you might have.
Thanks! ~Lisa
