Understanding Why Kids Behave The Way They Do

Indiana School Counselors Association Conference is coming up and I can’t wait to present a session on “Why Kids Behave The Way They Do”. As we head into the holiday season, we are all seeing some behaviors ramping up and I thought I’d share some of the resources from this workshop for anyone interested.

First, we have to go back to basics. Good ol’ grad school facts about behavior. 1) All behavior has purpose and 2) All kids are just striving to belong.

Why They are Acting this Way?

Remembering the 4 goals of misbehavior is one of my go-to conversations with teachers and parents and it helps determine why a student might be acting a certain way. What of these 4 goals are they seeking? Sometimes all you have to do is think about how YOU are feeling to determine if it’s attention, power, revenge, or avoiding failure. Click on the chart below for an overview. Or click here for a video review of the theory behind this.

  1. I’m currently filing an interim counseling position in an elementary school. The position is a 3 day position so I am working to provide effective skills lessons as part of the comprehensive school counseling program. Your shared lesson plans and ppts are very helpful and free up time from planning that allows me to provide responsive services to more students. Additionally the parent and staff information that supports the skills we are teaching is a great bonus! Parents and staff express how helpful the information is and are thankful to have received it(with credit to the source of course).
In this season of “Reflection on Thankfulness”, I am thankful for your blog. What a great personal and professional resource! Happy Thanksgiving!

    1. Meliene,
You certainly made my day!! That’s what counselors do, right!!? I so appreciate your kind words. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. You make a difference with kids and you made a difference with me filling my bucket. All the best!
